From Refugee Camps to Revival: Don Schrenk's Incredible Journey of Multiplying Bible Training
In the midst of the world's refugee crisis, where millions are displaced from their homes and communities, hope emerged through the efforts of a dedicated BTCP (Bible Training Centre for Pastors) graduate. Meet Don Schrenk, a member of Johnson Ferry Church, who, in 2019, birthed a ministry that has been transforming lives and multiplying Bible training in the most unlikely of places – the U.N. refugee camps in Uganda.
**Teaching the Vine: Sowing Seeds of Faith**
The ministry Don founded, aptly named "Teaching the Vine," was established with a purpose: to provide comprehensive Bible training for pastors, church leaders, and even children living in the U.N. refugee camps in Uganda. This initiative began with just six schools and has now grown to an impressive 31 schools. What's even more remarkable is the fact that over 300 students have graduated from these schools, with an additional 375 currently in training.
**Challenges in the Refugee Camps**
Operating in refugee camps presents its own unique set of challenges. One such challenge is the reduction of food supplies by the U.N. After spending one and a half years in these camps, individuals are no longer eligible for U.N. food assistance. This policy change has left many refugees facing a difficult decision: should they leave the camps and risk the unknown, or should they stay and endure the harsh conditions?
Amidst these challenges, Teaching the Vine seeks to bring biblical pastor training to South Sudan and the Congo, emphasizing a faith that isn't rooted in prosperity but in the Word of God. Their approach prioritizes building lasting relationships across borders, ensuring that the ministry isn't a fleeting presence but a permanent source of spiritual support.
**Empowering Women and Children**
One of the notable aspects of Teaching the Vine's work is its commitment to empowering women in the refugee camps. In a culture where women often face suppression, this ministry intentionally included women, with ten men and two women initially graduating from the first cycle of Bible training. When the women expressed a desire to have their own classes, Teaching the Vine embraced the opportunity wholeheartedly. Women refugees now teach other women, sparking a culture shift within the camp.
From this empowering foundation, the ministry expanded to include a children's ministry, with 275 children currently enrolled. These children, educated in the Word of God, carry their newfound knowledge back to their families and communities, enriching them spiritually.
**Translation Efforts: Impacting Millions**
Another exciting development within Teaching the Vine is the translation of Bari, a language spoken by about 6 million people. A passionate graduate of BTCP has taken up the mantle, teaching in Bari using Bari Bibles alongside the English BTCP curriculum. This exemplifies the dedication and love for the program and its curriculum.
**Prayers and Faith in Action**
Teaching the Vine operates with a profound sense of faith. They trust in the Lord's guidance, believing that doors open where He intends them to be and close where He does not. The ministry relies on the prayers of dedicated individuals and churches around the world to support its mission.
